Claude Max vs the API: when you're actually saving money
Spending fewer tokens always helps. Whether it saves you money depends on how you pay Anthropic.
On the API, every token is cash
With an API key you pay per token: on Opus 5.5, $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens; on Sonnet 5.5, $2 and $10; on Haiku 5.5, $0.10 and $0.50. Every token you do not spend is money you keep, the same month.
On a plan, saved tokens are headroom
Pro and Max (Max $100 or Max $200 a month) have a flat price and usage limits. Using fewer tokens lets you work longer before you hit a limit, but the price stays the same. Saved tokens turn into saved cash in only two ways:
- You stop buying extra usage. If you used to top up when you hit the limit and now you don't need to, that is real money.
- You move to a cheaper plan. If your usage now fits Max $100 instead of Max $200, you save $100 a month.
If you never hit your limit and never top up, cutting tokens changes nothing on your bill. It still gives you more room on busy days.
Which one are you?
- You hit your plan's limit and buy extra usage: cutting tokens saves cash now.
- You are on Max $200 and rarely reach the limit: check whether Max $100 would do.
- You use the API: every saving is cash; your Console's Usage and Cost pages show it.
How Tokensitter charges for this
We follow the same rule: we only count cash you actually keep, and a month where we saved you less than our cost is free. See how pricing works.
